How do you say "depressed" in French?

Graduate school has gone from a nebulous idea of a utopian paradise where I would be on a first-name basis with professors who respected me and recognized my latent talent, to a dull reality whose expiration I plotted on my calendar to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance,” and then made a final metamorphosis to a harshly synthetic pipedream where onion-like layers of pointless theory are stacked one on top of the other in a kind of Procrustean exercise to transform what seemed a practical, skill-building course of study into a grotesque parody of literary theory.

I’m just shy of two months into my graduate career, which means that I have finished about 18% of my Master’s degree, and the only light at the end of the tunnel is the promise of a job that will help me to pay back the mountain of student loan debt I’ve accrued in cobbling together an education. In all likelihood, this will not be a job I enjoy, and the probability that I will not be good at whatever job I get approaches 100%.

So far, the only advantage I have that I can attribute to my well-rounded education is my ability to recognize and articulately comment on my own unhappiness. In general, I’m bitter, pessimistic, cynical and angry way more often than any given situation warrants.

If it weren’t for Cracked and Penny Arcade, and maybe God (?) I’d probably start shooting up and drinking a lot.

I'm sorry to hear that grad school isn't the idyllic place you hoped it would be. I'm thankful I won't have to deal with even more school once I'm finished with my undergraduate degree.

As for your future job, I can't guarantee that you'll absolutely love it. However, I would think that you would be quite good at it. You've always struck me as a very competent individual, and you seem to learn things quickly. So you can take your "I will not be good at whatever job I get" theory and throw it out the window.

While I wish you didn't consider yourself unhappy, I do enjoy your posts; and you're right, they are quite articulate and eloquent. You could always write a book... maybe your misery will make you the next Lewis Black!

Ironic or coincidence? Kumbaya just started playing on my Pandora "Folk Singers" station...

That being said, whether there's a God (intentional capitalization) or not, the power is in the people. Ultimately--tangibly, you're the one that has chosen to go to Grad school, not abuse drugs, go to the grocery store, whatever. Also, your friends are here. You can talk to us. And we talk back; furthermore, hearing us talk back will never give you doubts about your sanity, but I digress.

My advice for you (only shoved upon you because you've posted in such a public place):

1. Stay in Grad School for now. If nothing else, you're deferring interest accruement on your loans, right?

2. Start saving money and looking for the quickest way out of debt that you can--Once you do that, you might feel freer to explore other options that you enjoy, but aren't necessarily financially viable. Say, if you really liked making pottery, but the only way that you could figure out how to do it is to work for slightly more than minimum wage, live in a rent free/utilities free apartment, and get free use of someone's equipment and supplies... just for an example off of the top of my head.

3. Know that situations can and will change. If your first job out of Grad School is a job proofreading manuals for Chinese electronics, that won't be your job forever.

Also, if you're looking for something to do on Saturday, October 13th, I could use some help, both transportationally and personage. /end sp

In conclusion, I find it hard to believe that you don't know how to say "depressed" in French. ;)

Garet, if medicine tasted good, I'd be putting cough syrup on my pancakes.

As acting Devils advocate, I'd like to add that I couldn't be happier in graduate school.
